Q&A: What does a home theatre surround sound system involve?

Question by : What does a home theatre surround sound system involve?
I am looking into adding surround sound to my television. I understand computers, TV’s, blurays, etc. but audio equipment is foreign to me. I have some simple questions:

What does it take to get a system set up? Wires in the walls? What if house wiring is out of date?

Also, what are some good brands of equipment? Preferably for under $ 600. So Klipsch is not an option.

Well, a good surround sound system will cost considerably more than $ 600. I myself have $ 8K in it.
You’ll need a receiver that decodes Hi-def sources from Blu-ray
5 speakers (left, right, center, rear right, & rear left)
1 capable sub woofer for the low frequencies
a TV with 1080p resolution
a Blu-ray player
wiring for all components this includes patch cables, speaker wire, & HDMI cables
a half decent stand for it all that won’t flex or bow under the weight. So particle board is a no no.
Good brands depend on budget. I won’t recommend any right now b/c I would be here a long time writing them. Klipsch is good, but they can get expensive real fast. But, I will suggest this set for you b/c imo it’s a decent starter set & you can build on it. Cheers!

No, you can not connect a turn table to a home theater in a box. Turn table has to be connected to a receiver that has a phone line input. Some turn table have USB connection to connect it to a computer. Hope this will help you out.

Don’t know much about the market in India, just know I really like Indian food!

Anyway, the deal about the sound bar is this… In order to simulate surround sound it needs side walls. The way it works is that it creates directed beams of sound that bounce off the side walls and simulate surround. If your room doesn’t have side walls like in a case where a living area connects with a dining area to the side it won’t work. If you have a nice rectangular room where there are side walls for these directed beams of sound to bounce then it can work ok.

Personally I would never use a sound bar but then I’m a pretty hard core guy when it comes to audio. See my theatre… http://mfk-projects.com/home_theatre.htm I put about $ 50,000 US$ into it by doing it all my self, it would have been at least $ 200,000 if done commercially. If you have the space, means to route the wiring etc I would recommend you go with a 5.1 surround system instead of a sound bar but this also depends on you. My down stairs system is very simple because it’s mostly just for TV and I don’t watch much TV. If surround sound isn’t an important thing to you then maybe a sound bar will be ok.

You will need a professional Pa system for sure.

The key is what it will be used for, music, or speech only.

Also what kind of sound presure levels you are needing to reproduce. Those are the first important aspects to first ask yourself. Although I have my own personal preferences as far as brands of equipment, but the room or halls acoustics must be considered when choosing the right equipment.

Most stores that offer professional equipment should have a representative that can come out view the room or hall and evaluate the acoustic of the room and make his recommendation.

Microphones: Its all about Neumann mic’s for me. Not cheap but the best.
Sennhieser, AKG,

Mixers: Mackie,

Equalizer: Manley, Rane
People absorb high frequencys so this allow you to have presets to compensate for the different amounts of people that attend the concert.

Speaker systems: Meyers Speakers. They are well balanced sound wise, very good midrange, sweet and delicate high frequencys, and nice tight and detailed bass frequencys.

Amplifers: QSC (solid state) , Manley (tubes) They are reliable, smooth never harsh, good dynamics.

Cables: Mogami

Speaker placement and acoustic material should be considered to help improve voice and instrument inteligbility, and detail.

Good luck
Kevin
