Are surround sound systems really worth the price?

Question by GW: Are surround sound systems really worth the price?
I have a PS3, a standard-def Tivo, and a Comcast cable box with HD channels. I work at an electronics store, and can get a Yamaha 600 watt, 5.1 channel system (YHT-391BL) for $ 260 with my discount. Many of my coworkers say that surround sound is a lot better, and I want some outside opinions before I commit. Also, does anyone have feedback about the home theater system I mentioned? Thanks.

surround sound is great if you like to really get into the big action movies or nature shows, or sports. it’ll be really cool with the video games too. i can’t speak on that particular system you want but i do know that yamaha has always made great electronics. usually far out of my price range.
when my tv used to work i rarely turned on the surround sound and i’m not much of a gamer but i always crank it up to watch movies. star wars, lord of the rings, even old westerns are so much better when you have the sound to back them up. i don’t even have a sub-woofer and it’s still great.
i think you’ll be happy with the surround sound system.

Just like a home theater, quality components are key, and just like a home theater, going cheap on something will impact the quality of the whole system. The price differential on a head unit (your radio/CD player) is not that much between some piece of crap from Kmart and a good stereo. Spend the money. The extra $ 100 will make a world of difference. Same goes for wiring. Going cheap saves you so little money. Go ahead and spring for the best you can get.

Next are your speakers. These are just as, if not more, important than the stereo, as they are what physically make the sound. Spend money here!!! Don’t go cheap. High quality speakers will give you crisp clean sound, and possibly some decent bass response, but cheap speakers will sound like crap. The best stereo in the world will sound awful with bad speakers, but even a mediocre stereo can sounds pretty damn good with great speakers.

A subwoofer is optional, depending on your goals, but I would recommend one regardless. Just like a home theater, you’ll get some bass response from your speakers, but if you want any real punch, you’ll want a sub. Of course, if you want to rock the block, then you’ll definitely want a sub, and probably an amp.
