Q&A: How do you connect surround sound to your digital set top box??

Question by Nicky: How do you connect surround sound to your digital set top box??
I just brought a plasma, it needed a set top box, there are 3 plugs that go into the set top box and into the tv. (red and white) There is a yellow one but that’s for video. I have just brought a surround sound system too that’s a dvd with an inbuilt amp. If the red and blue plugs go from the tv to the set top box how do I connect the same plugs into the dvd/amp? I know this q. makes no sense and that’s because it doesn’t unless you would be really cluey with this sort of thing, if this was a basic set up it would be easy, the plugs would go from the plasma straight into the dvd but there is a set top box in between. I tried to connect them from the set top to the dvd but got no sound however, the radio worked as I have the areal for that connected which shows the speakers are connected…can anyone help? Thanks :)

OK for TRUE DOLBY SURROUND…..
Use the Optical output the Digital Audio output on your Set Top box….those stereo RCA cables are STRICTLY Stereo.

If you do not find Optical or Digital connections on your DVD/Amp, it is because the DVD/Amp unit was only DESIGNED to get Dolby Surround from the DVDs and nothing Else….
That’s why I like a Dedicated amp over combo units.

I like Onkyo and Sony, but I was disappointed in the Onkyo dying an early death, and the parts were MORE than the unit was worth….

So I’m going to get me a YAMAHA this Christmas….Although DENON amps are good too….Of course, that’s what SALEMEN say….

I’d like to hear what an AUDIO TECH would say about this…..

OH! And connect your Set Top box using the HD COMPONENT CABLE…..that’s the 3 Wire Video — Red Green Blue connectors with the standard Red/White Audio connections on them.
What you’re using is the LOW Definition connectors — Yellow Red and White.

Q&A: What is the cheapest way for me to hook up an external sound system Digital Output (Optical)?

Question by bendad: What is the cheapest way for me to hook up an external sound system Digital Output (Optical)?
My new TV only has a digital output for sound. No analog connections unfortunately. Is there anything I can do short of buying a full blown receiver? I spent a lot of cash recently, and don’t want to buy an expensive receiver as well.

Thanks!

Answer by Daniel K
Yes, you can use the headphone jack on your stereo as an output to pretty much any recorder. You will need the right cable though. A 1/8 inch stereo to RCA cable would get you started:

For the Zoom recorder you would also need two RCA to 1/4 adapters:

How can I make My iPod work with a Dolby Digital Surround Sound System?

digital sound system
by LD PIX

Question by Brilliantjimjim: How can I make My iPod work with a Dolby Digital Surround Sound System?
I currently own an iPod video, a Kensington iPod dock, a Polkaudio 5.1 surround sound system, and an Onkyo receiver/amplifier.

I’m trying to connect my iPod with the sound system; since my iPod dock doesn’t have digital outputs, the best way I can think of is to use a Y cable (headphone plug on one side and RCA-red & white- on the other) to connect to my receiver.
However, I was told that only digital audio connections (coaxial & optic… can fully work with Dolby Digital 5.1 while RCA cables can’t.

So my question is that is the information above true? Or Is there a way to make my iPod work with my Dolby Digital surround sound system Fully (to make it functional 5.1 not “2.1″)?

Thanks
Jimmy

I would stick with what you have right now. I have been searching for an ipod dock that has a digital output and it looks like you have to spend more than your ipod to get it.

http://www.msbtech.com/products/productsHome.php

Try $ 1995 for an ipod dock with digital coax out!!! They must be joking right!

There is nothing wrong with your connection right now. You can still hear the sound properly. The AV receiver should have some kind of proccessing power to at least make the analog signal sound better on the 5.1 system.

You can spend $ 1995 if you truly want digital audio.

OK, I have consulted with other people and they said that the ipod output is analog audio anyway. So that ipod dock is probably using PRO LOGIC or something to convert analog audio to digital audio…which means it’s doing the same thing as a receiver with PRO LOGIC processing. Which means…you really don’t need to spend $ 1995 on the dock-spend it on a good receiver with Pro Logic processing.

Besides is there really a 5.1 (surround sound) content comming from Apple or any other source? Not likely…

Optical Digital Surround Sound Systems?

Question by Beast Sheest: Optical Digital Surround Sound Systems?
can anyone help me find a cheapish surround sound system (2.1 would do, dont need a 5.1 yet) BUT i want it to connect via optical to my ps3. ive already lookd at the original sony ps3 suroound system so any other one except that one i would be happy to look at.

Best answer:

Answer by JD
The vast majority of 2.1 surround sound systems are being designed for computers not home theater, as such you will more than likely get a better system at a better price choosing a 5.1 system, and setting it in stereo mode.

That being said, if you are dead-set on a 2.1 system, there are several 2.1 sound bar systems available and a few of them utilize the digital optical port.

A digital optical port is typically used for 5.1 surround sound so, it will be much more difficult to find a 2.1 system with it, than a 5.1.
