Q&A: How do you connect surround sound to your digital set top box??

Question by Nicky: How do you connect surround sound to your digital set top box??
I just brought a plasma, it needed a set top box, there are 3 plugs that go into the set top box and into the tv. (red and white) There is a yellow one but that’s for video. I have just brought a surround sound system too that’s a dvd with an inbuilt amp. If the red and blue plugs go from the tv to the set top box how do I connect the same plugs into the dvd/amp? I know this q. makes no sense and that’s because it doesn’t unless you would be really cluey with this sort of thing, if this was a basic set up it would be easy, the plugs would go from the plasma straight into the dvd but there is a set top box in between. I tried to connect them from the set top to the dvd but got no sound however, the radio worked as I have the areal for that connected which shows the speakers are connected…can anyone help? Thanks :)

OK for TRUE DOLBY SURROUND…..
Use the Optical output the Digital Audio output on your Set Top box….those stereo RCA cables are STRICTLY Stereo.

If you do not find Optical or Digital connections on your DVD/Amp, it is because the DVD/Amp unit was only DESIGNED to get Dolby Surround from the DVDs and nothing Else….
That’s why I like a Dedicated amp over combo units.

I like Onkyo and Sony, but I was disappointed in the Onkyo dying an early death, and the parts were MORE than the unit was worth….

So I’m going to get me a YAMAHA this Christmas….Although DENON amps are good too….Of course, that’s what SALEMEN say….

I’d like to hear what an AUDIO TECH would say about this…..

OH! And connect your Set Top box using the HD COMPONENT CABLE…..that’s the 3 Wire Video — Red Green Blue connectors with the standard Red/White Audio connections on them.
What you’re using is the LOW Definition connectors — Yellow Red and White.

Top surround sound system for good price?

Question by max: Top surround sound system for good price?
I’m moving into an apartment on a college campus and want a really good surround sound system for my tv, xbox, ipod, computer etc but for a good price. A big subwoofer would be nice too. Thanks a lot.

well you posted a really confusing questions. ones i find with cheap people and people that arnt really reasonable. if your asking the best system for a price i can answer. you sound like a frat kid that wants the most insane pounding thing ever.

you can buy an all in one kit which sound like crap. or you can piece it right. I would do 2 things..

1 piece right,
buy a Yamaha reciever (best you can buy)
buy 2 Klipsch towers/ even bookshielfs are awesome.
buy 10in Klipish subwoofer
all the cables and your set.

A full surround will cost more money not really worth it an apartment plus if you piss of the neighbors with big bass.

if you want to do a nice 5.1
klipsh qwintant system and a yamaha reciever and klipsch sub.

Contact me and i will get in more detail if you want.
