Surround Sound Receiver

Q&A: How do I hook up my surround sound receiver to my TV using the TV as audio, not the surround sound speake?

Question by thedude22: How do I hook up my surround sound receiver to my TV using the TV as audio, not the surround sound speake?
I want to use my surround sound receiver without the surround sound speakers. I basically want to use the receiver as a DVD player for my room, but the surround sound speakers would be a bit much. Therefore, I want to use the TV as audio. Is there a way to do this?

If this DVD player of yours has a set of red/white stereo audio outputs, simply connect those to your TV along with the video cable.

If your DVD player doesn’t have audio outputs, then you’ll have to get a new DVD player.

This lack of flexibility is why I hate those “home theater in a box” kits so much. They may be cheap, but they often just come with a DVD player that has a surround sound decoder inside of it, and no additional inputs or outputs that a real surround receiver would have.

Q&A: PS3 Picture quality when connecting HDMI through surround sound receiver?

Question by M K: PS3 Picture quality when connecting HDMI through surround sound receiver?
When I connect my PS3′s HDMI cable directly to the TV the picture quality is great. But when I go through the surround sound receiver (brand new Denon AVR-1610) it flickers constantly and is unwatchable.

I’ve tried different HDMI cables and even a different surround receiver, same thing. My XBox 360 is connected to this receiver via HDMI and it looks great.

I would think my PS3 my be bad, but it works when connected to the TV.

Any thoughts?

I have always found that it is better to go directly to the tv when connecting video via the receiver. Try witching HDMI port on your receiver (you should have more than one) say from 3 to 1 or 2 and see if the video improves. Low end receiver have a poor record in passing video to the tv, compare to higher end receivers. Pioneer Elite does a very good good along with Onkyo receivers 600 and up series receivers. Hope this will help you out.

It’s just a naming issue. Most receiver now have a 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound that can accomadate a DVD or Blue Ray disc player with DHMI connections. Here’s a very good receiver Onkyo TX-SR606 7.1 for $ 499 at Fry’s Electronic. You can read the review of this receiver on Home Theater Magazine.
