Question by dontmovemeagain: Looking for an inexpensive portable system that sounds good in a gymnasium?
I’m a Zumba Fitness instructor and am in need of a sound system that works with an iPod, is portable, sounds good, and is loud enough for a community college gymnasium. I don’t know much about stereo equipment, so do I need speakers, an amp, a system? Need to know the terminology in order to search for the right products.

I would recommend a “powered speaker” and a speaker stand. A powered speaker is basically a complete sound system in one package. You plug it into AC power, connect your ipod and you have sound.
If you are connecting an ipod AND a microphone, you will need one with at least two inputs. A speaker like this will cost at least $ 400 and you can spend a lot more depending on the brand.

That one comes with a speaker stand.

Cable to connect ipod to speaker:

If you want to buy this stuff locally, you will need to check out a store that sells musical instruments and sound systems (Guitar Center?).
