i’m sort of in charge of getting a dj for our prom and i wanted to make sure that i get a quality dj for a good price.

It varies widely depending where where you live.
The way you word your question & your comment, sounds like they are contradicting each other, so I’m not sure what you are asking.

Sounds like you already have a DJ lined up & just need a sound system.

Sounds like you do not have a DJ lined up & are looking for a DJ.
When you hire a mobile DJ, you do not have to rent a sound system. Mobile DJs provide their own sound & lighting system.
On average most mobile DJs charge about $ 100 an hour with a 4 hour charge minimum. Meaning if you hire a mobile DJ charging $ 100 an hour to play for two hours, you will be charged $ 400.
But as I said your area my be more expensive, or cheaper.
Do not just choose the cheapest mobile DJ, especially for something where the success of the event is so closely connected to how good, or bad the entertainment is, like a Prom, or Wedding Reception party.
It may be money well spent to spend twice the money to get a good mobile DJ over a bad mobile DJ.
If you are unfamiliar with the mobile DJs in your area, ask around to find out which mobile DJs have good reputations. You can try asking other High Schools, or Wedding Planers. (If a mobile DJ is good a wedding receptions, they will be good at proms.)
BTW
It’s usually almost as expensive (& in some cases can even be more expensive) to just rent a sound system for a DJ as it is to hire a mobile DJ.
