Question by PTH: How do I wire my surround sound system with component/RCA cables?
I’m trying connect my surround sound system… I have a Direct TV HD receiver connected to my TV with a HDMI cable. My surround sound receiver is a little older so it does not have a HDMI connection. It does have component and RCA connections. My Direct TV receiver also has component and RCA connections. Can I just connect the surround sound to the Direct TV receiver without connecting to the TV?

If it really is a surround sound system, it is going to have optical audio or coaxial audio and I know Directv HD receivers have at least one, if not both of those types of outputs. If you want true surround sound, you don’t get that from the red and white RCA type connections. You have to use the digital outputs I mention to the corresponding inputs on your receiver.
