Why would surround sound play certain dvds and not play the sound a certain series of others?

Question by moore_micki: Why would surround sound play certain dvds and not play the sound a certain series of others?
I have a 2 sets of Scooby Doo dvds that my surround sound will not play the sound the picture is fine but the sound won’t play, its the only ones that i have found that don’t work- others dvds work fine. Why would the sound not work just for those dvds? Also the surround sound speakers won’t work with satellite, and the tv speakers won’t play with dvd only the surround sound speakers will.

The DVD’s surround sound encoding may not be compatible with the decoder in your receiver. As for the satellite, that is because it is in stereo, not in 5.1, 5.2, 7.1, 7.2, etc. The TV speakers don’t work because the audio is being fed through the receiver, not the TV.

good question. and YES you need DVD that with the features. 5.1 channel is already back dated in the home theater industries. 2 front speaker, 2 surround speaker, 1 center speaker and .1 sub woofer. Some amplifiers are capable to auto detect the output of the DVD player should it be stereo mode (2 speakers), or other sound mode such as AC3, Dolby Surround, Pro Logic, Digital Surround, etc. While some you need to manually tune either the amplifier or the DVD player sound mode. Refer to the guideline / manual of both items to understand more.

However in order to reach such desire, you need .. no matter how to ensure your DVD (the disc) has the features. If it comes with multiple sound mode, you need to manually tune it. In the present market standard sound mode provided in the DVD are Pro Logic, DTS, DTS ES and 2.1 channel(Stereo)

Is it okay to use cheap speakers with a sound surround Receiver?

Question by Thomas: Is it okay to use cheap speakers with a sound surround Receiver?
I just got my mom a sound surround receiver for her birthday, and wasn’t planning on getting any new speakers until xmas for her. But the guy at my future shop told me that if she where to use her cheap speakers that came with her dvd player, it would fry the Receiver? I just wanted to know if this was true, or if the guy was trying to milk more money from me?

The idiot sales guy is trying to get you to buy him a nice vacation in the Caribbean. You are more in danger of popping the speakers than you are in popping the receiver. Your plan is a good one. Get the main box now, get decent speakers later.

As for how careful to be with the volume, that depends. Multiply your per channel power by 1.25. If the speakers are that rating or above, you should be safe. At lower ratings, don’t crank it.
