Q&A: Bose Companion 3 as my main sound system?

Question by Chay: Bose Companion 3 as my main sound system?
I have a small apartment, will the Bose Companion 3 be ok to use as my main sound system? I only ever use an ipod for my audio so the headphone jack will be fine!!! However just want to make sure it is powerful enough to fill my open planned lounge/dinner/kitchen before i go buy it?

lol, no. Bose is not really powerful enough for anything to be honest. They’re overpriced to the max.

What I would recommend would be to pick up a pair of bookshelf speakers if you have an amplifier or home theater reciever lying around. If you don’t, that’s okay because there’s a pair of American made powered speakers that might be just perfect for an apartment…

AudioEngine’s A2 speakers are what I use for my computer, and they only cost about $ 200. The only con that I can come up with for them is that they don’t have a subwoofer… but you really don’t need one. The only bass these guys put out is smooth and undistorted bass.

They certainly don’t go down as low as a sub would, but they are ages ahead of Bose in every respect. Also, they can be hooked up to almost anything via a pair of RCA jacks and a 3.5mm input.

If you have a spare amp sitting around, I recommend AudioEngine’s passive P4 speakers at $ 250. On a budget, I recommend getting two JBL Control NOW speakers at about $ 80 each for a total of $ 160-ish. They’re almost as good as AudioEngine, and will put out equally awesome sound ina small room. Remember though, you need a decent amp to make them sound good, that’s why I say just get the AudioEngine A2s as they’re already powered.

Good luck
