Question by just_another_spaz: Installing surround sound system?
I will freely admit that I am a moron when it comes to Home Theater Systems and surround sound. I would like to purchase and install a surround sound system, but would like for the system to work both when I am watching a dvd on the blu-ray player and well as when I am watching regular TV. What system is the best to buy and how do I hook it up so that the system works with both the blu-ray player and cable tv?
I have a magnavox 37MF337B flat screen tv and a Sony avcHD BDP-S360 blu-ray player.

Look at an Onkyo HT-S3300, it is a 5.1 receiver and a set of speakers. You will need 2 HDMI cable and 1 optical cable. You connect an HDMI cable from your Sony blu ray disc player and the other end to the Onkyo receiver, and another HDMI cable from the receiver to the tv. Then with an optical cable connect it from the tv to the receiver. Keep in mind that not all tv program are in surround sound, only those program with the Dolby Digital Logo will have the surround sound. The Onkyo system will provide you the instruction for connecting the speakers to it. You can demo the Onkyo at a Fry’s Electronic store. Just double check to make sure that your Magnavox tv has the optical audio output port, this is a digital signal that carry surround sound. If it has RCA jacks then it is only in stereo. If you have cable or a disc network provider, check and see what they provide for output connection. If it has HDMI you can connect it directly to the tv, to get the video and audio (which you will also need another HDMI cable, if you are using one already then you are fine). Hope this will help you out.
