Why does one speaker on my home stereo system sound lower than the other?

Question by J760: Why does one speaker on my home stereo system sound lower than the other?
I have a Kenwood KR-A5040 Receiver, and I’m running two Kenwood Home Stereo Speakers with it. I notice that the right speaker sounds lower than the left even with the balance centered, if I use the balance knob and turn all the way to the left that speaker is loud and sounds great, but turn to the right and it sounds much lower. Also sometimes when I’m using the radio the right speaker will cut out entirely and I have to fiddle with the balance knob to get it to cut back in. All the connections with the speakers and receiver are correct and snug. Is the right speaker just going bad or is this something with the receiver? Everything else works fine besides this issue.

Like now only more so. Most people will befooled into buying plastic 2160i or whatever “multimedia” systems with harsh grainy opamps playing into plastic speaker cabinets. Few will continue to listen to good sources playedthrough amps designed for audio into speakers where the cabinet costs about the same as the drivers.

This thing has a better stereo system than I’ll probably ever have in my home or car. Those are real 6×9 speakers, and there is at least one sub and an amp in there. And a music source. I’m guessing it’s all hooked to an iPod.

Let’s just assume this kid won’t be asking for a bike for his birthday or Christmas anytime soon.
