Shaka: Student of the game
Strolling past the gymnasium at Oregon (Wis.) High School, boys' basketball coach Kevin Bavery heard a familiar sound. It was that of a bouncing basketball. One thing about that sound, however, wasn't familiar. It was an afternoon in July.

The design entails what speakers to use, amplifiers, sound mixers, microphones, etc. how do you interconnect these with each other?

I teach at an elementary school with about 400 students. Our gymnasium is not gigantic but it can hold everybody plus some. We use a Fender P250. Its a portable system that can be moved outside for parades and other events. It has more than enough power for everyone to hear and is pretty easy to setup and use. (I often plug the laptops into it — with a few wire coversions — for excellent presentations with our LCD projector). You’d have to get the tripod stands for the speakers too to give them some height. Price is about $ 700 plus another $ 120 for the speaker tripods.

This unit is all inclusive with the speakers, amplifiers and the very basic tone and bass adjustments. There is a master volume control and volume controls for each input which would include your microphone jacks and if I remember correctly at least to other jacks. (So as far as connecting everything, plug it in, put the jack and mic’s into there designated slots and you have yourself some very adequate volume.)

If you’re trying to do a full audio system with a sound board I’m pretty sure that you’d also have to add some type of material to the walls to absorb the sound otherwise it’s going to just bounce around with bad echo (I’m assuming that its a concrete block gym). Are you trying to do concerts or plays there???

Will an inexpensive CD player have enough watts to send the music to a gymnasium sound system?

Question by Chadrock .: Will an inexpensive CD player have enough watts to send the music to a gymnasium sound system?
I teach PE in a gymnasium and I like to have music pumped in for running/free time/a dance unit. Will a cheap CD player, connected to a gymnasium sound system via the headphone jack output and an adapter into RCA plugs work well?

Your CD player would not make the difference. It all depends on the receiver your are using. I have a regualr CD player conected to my garage stereo and it sounds very good!!!
