Question by phillies fan049: Car sound system (1996 chrysler cirrus)?
I have an older car, and not the best. therefore, the sound system sucks. I am obsessed with music, and since the car is really old, the sound system is not good at all. I am looking for a cheaper sound system. One that I can eventually place in a new car that I will get in 2-3 years. I want to know what all I need and why( Im new to car sound systems). I LOVE the bass, so I would like to maximize that(I have no clue what part does that) So far, Ive found a reciever I likehttp://www.bestbuy.com/site/Sony+-+52W+x+4+Apple%26%23174%3B+iPod%26%23174%3B-/Satellite+Radio-/HD+Radio-Ready+CD+Deck/1149887.p?id=1218225363590&skuId=1149887&st=Sale_Car_Audio_20111023&cp=1&lp=2
What else do I need?

The reciever is generally called a head unit in car audio. In addition, you’ll need 4 speakers to replace the factory papercone speakers, a subwoofer in a box, an amp, an amp wiring kit, a stereo wiring harness (specific to vehicle), and a head unit dash mounting kit.
The easy part is the speakers. Get something that can easily handle the 52W output per channel from the head unit. The speakers just have to be the same size as the ones in the car (usually 6x9s in the back and 5.25″ or 6.5″ in the front.
The head unit gets installed in the dash using the mounting kit (just follow the instructions) and gets wired to the factory stereo harness using the new wiring harness to make the whole process easier and reversible if you ever want to put the factory stereo back in.
The amp wiring kit generally comes with a power wire, fuse and fuse block, audio cables, ground cable and remote line. The fused power wire carries power directly from the battery to the amp. The ground wire grounds the negative amp terminal to the vehicle body. The remote line (normally blue) carries power from the head unit to the amp telling the amp to turn on and off. Finally, the audio cables carry the sound from the head unit to the amp (usually in the trunk).
The sub(s) are mounted in a box to hold the sub and produce better acoustics. It is normally wired to the amp output channels using regular speaker wire. It’s common to mount the amp to the side of the box to hold it all together.
If you want lots of bass for a low cost and you are not an audiophile then a bandpass box is the way to go. Just ask your audio shop about this style. A 500W amp and sub would be lots to get the volume you’re looking for.
