Question by Vixen: Hey young folks, help me choose a stereo?
So I’m 42 years old, and used to have the “coolest” stereo system when I was in my teens, with a lot of components and a turntable… and huge speakers. It died when I was in my 20′s, and ever since I’ve just used a regular radio or the car stereo or the computer. I want a good home stereo for parties (not loud raucous ones; I don’t need like TONS of bass).
Problem is, after looking on Amazon, they just all look so weird and nothing remotely like I used to have. So help me choose a good one for under $ 400. I don’t care for the Boze. If possible, I also need a dual cassette recorder so I can record tapes for my mom (she still has tons of cassette tapes). Probably ebay for that one.
So what do you suggest? While I wouldn’t be blasting my stereo, I do like to turn it up at times, so I want it to sound good. Also, what is the difference between surround sound and quadraphonic sound? My father has a quad set up at his house that he’s been proud of since the 70′s, but I can’t tell any difference between that and plain ole stereo.
Thanks guys. And gals.
Wow, Luanna. Never seen anything like it. It has great reviews. I don’t have an iPhone, and the only iPod I have is the Shuffle, which is incompatible. Would I be able to hook up some kind of CD player to this thing? I have a zillion CDs.

Personally I recommend anything by Altec Lansing. I’ve been impressed with them from a young age, they have always been a very impressive system. My speakers are Altec Lansing, and we just bought a brand new laptop less then a couple days ago and the speakers in that are Altec Lansing.
They could break if you blast them way too loud so watch out for teenagers abusing them, or whatever. For regular use, these are BEAUTIFUL… The music quality is superb…
