Question by asere: AV receiver auto sound calibration system?
How good is the auto sound calibration feature on AV receivers? When I use it it gives me different decibel readings for each speaker. Is that what it’s suppose to do? How about the sound meters from radio shack are those better than using the AV auto system?

The auto calibration systems on most receivers are pretty rudimentary. The quality depends on the brand and model. The better receivers use a third-party calibration system from a company called Audyssey. That’s good stuff! Calibration includes things like time and frequency, not just volume. Others – not so much. For a good basic calibration of volume levels I recommend a cheap SPL meter located at ear level in your seated position and manually running through the output levels of your receiver.
