Question by : Does a 1000 Watt aftermarket sound system require an amplifier?
Hi,
I recently installed a new sound system in my 1999 Suzuki Grand Vitara.
Here’s what I installed:
-2x 190W Sony Xplod GTFs in the roof
-2x 300W Sony Xplod GTXs in the door panels
-Pioneer head unit (DEH-22xx UB) @ 50w x 4 output
My question is, does this setup require an amplifier? If not, will an amplifier help make the sound quality better?

First, those wattage levels are the max watts, they aren’t a continuous power. The RMS rating of the speakers and head unit are what your looking for. That stereo is heavily overrated not bad for the money but overrated none the less, in reality it does about 14 watts rms which is the continuous power rating. The GTF are only rated at 40 watts rms and the GTX”s are rated at 75 watts rms. Warning never listen to the peak power especially on sony those numbers are always bs unless you get there highest lines of speakers. So yea you would get much better sound quality with an amplifier because an amp will actually be able to power the speakers to their full wattage. Just make sure the amplifier you buy has between 35 and 50 RMS power rating and i mean RMS, not peak. Peak wattage is always a disappointment especially on the cheaper equipment.
