Question by AREA51: 7.1 surround sound on a laptop? How does this work?
I was just wondering about his laptop I will be getting and it says that it has Intels HD audio with surround sound up to 7.1 support? How is this possible with just one audio jack?

That laptop has an HDMI output, which outputs both HD sound and video. I will guess that the 7.1 comes from there.

I have a Freeagent GO media player and it won’t play 7.1 audio. My TV doesn’t seem to support 7.1. If I got a Surround sound system, would it work?

Keep in mind that the only 7.1 audio is from a Blu Ray disc movies. There are no other software with a 7.1 audio. It is mainly decoded in the DTS HD Master audio. TV does not decode any surround sound system. Only a 7.1 receiver can decode that material. Hope this will help you out.

That depends on the sound card. If it uses optical out or hdmi then all you need to do is run a cable from the output of the soundcard into any free input on your receiver. If it’s 8 individual output jacks then you need to run one cable from each output into the 7.1 individual inputs on the receiver.
I mean, really… you hook the output from the soundcard into the input on the receiver… there’s nothing tough about it.

when you buy a 7.1 sound card the mannual will tell you all you need to know with reguards to how to connect the soundcard to your 7.1 setup. most use 4 stereo jacks that split to 2 phono plugs which will need to be connected to a 7.1 AV AMP or dedicated 7.1 pc speaker setup.
