Speakers are electroacoustic transducers that produce sound in response to an electrical audio signal input. Non-electrical loudspeakers were developed as accessories to telephone systems, but electronic amplification by vacuum tube made loudspeakers more generally useful.

A full-range driver is designed to have the widest frequency response possible. Used in multi-driver speaker systems, the crossover is a subsystem that separates the input signal into different frequency ranges suited to each driver.

Sound is a mechanical wave that is an oscillation of pressure transmitted through a solid, liquid, or gas, composed of frequencies within the range of hearing.

Sound reproduction is an electrical or mechanical inscription and re-creation of sound waves, such as spoken voice, singing, music, or sound effects.

Most loudspeaker systems consist of drivers mounted in an enclosure, or cabinet. The simplest driver mount is a flat panel.

Question by Sovelin: 2.1 sound systems vs 5.1 sound systems?
Just out of curiosity, is a 2.1 system ever preferred over a 5.1 system? Let’s say wires are not a concern. I’ve heard 5.1 systems are better if you watch movies, but if you are only planning on listening to music, 2.1 is the way to go? Is this true, or is 5.1 better in all respects as long as the speakers are good?

The only difference between 2.1 and 5.1 is the amount of speakers you get. A 2.1 speaker system is ideal for use on a computer where you have the left and right speaker and than a subwoofer. A 5.1 speaker system is ideal for use with a TV when your watching movies to have 5 speakers and than the subwoofer. It doesn’t matter which ones you use for which but personally I’d take the 5.1′s over the 2.1′s anyday, no matter what I’m using, you get a better feel of being surrounded by sound and it’s not bad to be surrounded by music on a computer or voicing/scenery etc. on a movie. 5.1 is only considered better than 2.1 because you get more speakers, it’s also a bit more expensive too, so I guess they can be considered better.

I have a fairly cheap 5.1 accoustic solutions surround sound less than £100 when I got it from Argos. It has a optical input and the sound is really good for a cheap 5.1 system obviously its not the best around but at this price its very good!
