In a surround sound system the first number stands for the number of channels (speakers)
3.1 = 3 channels
5.1 = 5 channels
and the .1 stands for the subwoofer channel

I was looking for an everything I need to set up a 3.1 surround sound system. Im looking to spend about 1500 total. I already have my subwoofer picked out (pb12-nsd). So I need speakers and a reciever. Ive got a blu-ray player. If anyone can suggest a nice set of speakers in that range that would be great.

you can get more out of a cheap say 500 dollar 5.1 system than an expensive 3.1 system. You are wasting your money.
